According to EY, digital and AI applications are expected to play a crucial for enhancing productivity and sustainability, leading to growth in Indian agriculture. The growing use of precision farming technologies, such as GPS-enabled tractors, drones with multispectral sensors, and IoT devices, has contributed notably to the sector’s steady expansion in the last year and is expected to continue into the coming years. Several strong investment trends in agri-tech, with over US$ 4.6 billion invested, reflect growing confidence in digital solutions.
If we look at the growth of the agriculture sector more closely, most of the selected crops, the world’s productivity surpasses India’s, with the exception of the groundnut, where India leads the most with 1848 Kg/ha, where India shows a marginal lead. The innovation in the agriculture sector is driven by AI (artificial intelligence) as it has developed the world’s first agriculture-specific large language model (LLM) designed for farmers, which is KissanAI’s Dhenu 1.0, which helps in providing voice-based assistance in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, and Hinglish. KissanAI is backed by Microsoft for startups. In January 2024, the company collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme to create a voice-enabled virtual assistant aimed at promoting climate-resilient farming.
