The Apollo Home Healthcare division, in alliance with Apollo Indraprastha Hospital, has launched an extensive home-based palliative care service in Delhi. This program aims to provide compassionate and professional care to patients having serious life-limiting illnesses, all within the comfort and dignity of their abodes. In due course of time, these services will be extended to Apollo Athenia, the newly operational cancer care centre for women in Delhi.
Palliative care, one of the services Apollo Home Healthcare specializes in, is essential for people suffering from chronic or terminal conditions such as cancer, end-stage organ failure, neurodegenerative conditions, and so forth. It considers relief mainly physical, but there is also emotional, psychological, and spiritual support given to patients and their families. At a time when demand is extraordinarily high, the constraining factor is that very few palliative-care services exist; currently, less than 2% of the estimated 5.4 million Indians needing palliative care each year actually receive it. An important share of this unmet demand arises from elderly populations.
According to the chart, 40% of the population that needs palliative care are aged 70 years and above, followed by 27.1% that lies between 50 and 69 years of age. Two-thirds of the total demand in this sector emanates from these two groups, thus highlighting the need for elderly-focused home care models.
"Our program ensures pain relief, symptom control, and compassionate support reach patients where they feel safest—in their homes," said Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, Consultant Pain and Palliative Care at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital.
Sai Kumar, Head – Medical Services at Apollo Home Healthcare, added further: "By reducing unnecessary hospital visits and meeting emotional and spiritual requirements, we aim to provide holistic care."
The company intends to establish this model in top metropolitan cities and tier-2 locations so that expert-led care may be accessible to all communities across India.
