World Looks to Biogas Despite Global Challenges by 2040

05 June 2025

Biogas, Global Methane Pledge

The global biogas market, valued at USD 65.53 billion in 2024, is projected to grow at a rate of 4.2% annually between 2025 and 2032. To accelerate this growth, the World Biogas Association (WBA) has launched two online tools aimed at helping governments speed up the deployment of anaerobic digestion (AD) systems to meet 2030 climate targets and reduce methane emissions. According to the WBA, biogas could contribute up to 50% of the Global Methane Pledge, helping to mitigate between 10% and 13% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Global Biogas Demand for Direct Use, 2018-2040

The biogas markets in Asia and Oceania are emerging, with countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand leading the way. Australia, with 242 biogas plants in 2017, has an estimated biogas potential of 103 TWh, roughly 9% of its total energy consumption. Southeast Asia, currently at 1 GW of biogas capacity, sees Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia as key players. Indonesia aims for 810 MW by 2025, Malaysia targets 1,065 MW, and Thailand projects 5,570 MW by 2036.

In 2024, the U.S. experienced a record year for biogas, with a 13% increase in capacity and a 40% rise in investment, according to the American Biogas Council (ABC). The country had 2,478 operational biogas facilities by year-end, with 566 converting biogases into renewable natural gas (RNG) and 1,418 generating electricity.
Despite this growth, significant expansion opportunities remain, as the U.S. disposes of 1.4 billion tons of manure, 33 million tons of food waste, and 1 million tons of biosolids annually. This provides enough feedstock to build an additional 24,000 anaerobic digestion systems. ABC estimates that the biogas industry in the U.S. is only about 10% built out, highlighting the vast untapped potential in the sector.

AstraZeneca has launched a biogas plant in the UK that will enable all its research, development, and drug manufacturing in Britain to run on clean energy by the end of 2024. This initiative is part of a 15-year agreement with UK-based biomethane producer Future Biogas.

The plant will supply 100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy annually to AstraZeneca’s three R&D and manufacturing sites in the UK. This supply accounts for 20% of the company’s total global gas consumption, marking a major step toward its sustainability goals.

Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is the usage of data science to be able to create predictive and self-deciding systems and environments, and provides an efficient alternative for conventional methods, has made great progress in various areas in recent years.
