The growth of India's organic food export sector has remained steady in the last few years, largely due to growth in global demand for chemical-free, sustainably produced products. Certified organic exports from India, particularly in tea, spices, and rice, have seen rapid growth from 2018-2023. The article will review the trends within these categories while discussing the important factors influencing India's organic food exports.
In the years between 2018-19 and 2022-23, India has seen organic tea exports grow 26 percent, organic spices exports have seen increase of 19.4 percent, and organic rice exports have increased 13.5 percent, showing the momentum of India's organic food sector being maintained, even in times of global uncertainty.
The largest category of organic food exports out of India is organic rice, contributing over 35 percent of the total organic export volumes by 2022-23, and a staple demand in major markets such as the USA and Europe.
Organic spices from India, such as turmeric, ginger, cumin, and chili, continue to show steady growth, even more so since the COVID-19 pandemic created attention around health-boosting foods, further solidifying India's supply chain as a major supplier of organic spices to the world.
Indian organic tea exports have been able to grow despite price competition from Sri Lanka and Kenya, and increasing acceptance of Indian organic tea in premium markets like the United States, Germany, and Japan, where quality and traceability are favoured.
The National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and the efforts of some States, including schemes like Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), have led to expanded certified organic cultivation areas; as a result, larger numbers of farmers have the opportunity to join the export ecosystem.
New markets are emerging, particularly the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and some East Asian countries are now importing increasing amounts of Indian organic spices and specialty teas, indicating that India is evolving its export opportunities for organic tea earlier than expected and well past its traditional export markets.
