Distributech 2025 More intelligent energy grid looms as utilities adopt AI

06 June 2025

Distributech

At Distributech 2025, one thing was clear: energy grids are going through a serious digital transformation, thanks to AI, machine learning, and IoT. Utilities aren’t just reacting anymore they’re getting ahead of the curve, especially as more distributed energy resources (DERs) come online, and power demands keep rising. Companies like GE Vernova, Honeywell, and Hitachi Energy are leading the way with AI tools focused on predictive maintenance, grid optimization, and improving overall reliability.

A major theme was the push for open, interoperable platforms that can connect data from edge devices to cloud systems without any hiccups. There’s also a growing focus on grid resilience, especially against wildfires and cyber threats, which is driving new developments in automation and real-time monitoring. What stood out was how fast software providers and cloud giants are teaming up to build platforms that can handle real-time analytics while staying scalable and smart.

Top 10 Technologies - Utilities

  • Big tech and energy players are going all-in on AI to shake up how power grids operate. Google is working with PJM Interconnection to streamline the interconnection queue — a first-of-its-kind move that helps bring new energy sources online faster. On the other hand, Microsoft and the Electric Power Research Institute kicked off the Open Power AI Consortium, bringing together 30 energy companies to build shared AI models that can speed up innovation and make systems work better together.
  • On the hardware side, Honeywell and Verizon rolled out 5G smart meters to deliver real-time consumption data almost instantly. Hitachi Energy teamed up with AWS to prevent outages using AI that monitors vegetation near power lines. Eaton’s HiZ Protect system can now detect wildfire-starting faults in under a second seriously fast. Schneider Electric also launched its One Digital Grid Platform, pulling together its existing EcoStruxure tech to simplify and modernize grid operations.
  • Meanwhile, Siemens is pushing its Xcelerator digital platform to help cut down the time it takes to upgrade grid systems. Itron and Schneider’s joint effort with Microsoft is proving that real-time data from the grid edge is no longer out of reach. And finally, Percepto is stepping it up with AI-powered drones that can spot infrastructure issues weeks before they become a problem — a big win for grid reliability.
