Sumitomo Chemical boasts the honor of having developed a fully-fledged production process for liquid crystal polymer (LCP) from biomass monomers breakthrough toward sustainable industrial materials. The company, being the acknowledged leader of the global LCP market, is at present aiming to achieve customer certification by the end of the fiscal year 2026, followed by commercial supply in 2027. Strongly regarded as LCPs are super engineering plastics that undergo mild treatment for use in components of smartphones, automobiles, and office automation systems due to their heat resistance and flame-retardant properties. Traditionally, they were manufactured from fossil-based raw materials, and obviously, LCP materials and similar engineering plastics are becoming targets of these greener alternatives. Hence, the course of the time change is summed up in the Sumitomo Chemical invention.
The new biomass-based LCP manufacturing procedure involves a segregation method in which the biomass-based materials get segregated from the fossil-based inputs; that way, the content of biomass can be accurately measured and certified in the final product. In the meantime, Sumitomo Chemical is also assessing the mass balance approach, where biomass is mixed with fossil materials, and the renewable share is determined on the basis of input ratios. Offering both methods makes it possible for the firm to satisfy various customer requirements with transparency and traceability.
The company's operations in India also recorded robust performance over the years. As shown in the graph below, Sumitomo Chemical India Limited’s revenue went from INR 30.36 million in 2022 to INR 34.73 million in 2023. Despite a slowdown in 2024, the company’s revenue bounced back to INR 31.48 million in 2025. Such a financial performance reflects resilience and, therefore, stands the company well for the coming years' transition to green products against bio-based ones.
This sustainable initiative reflects the overarching trend prevailing in the chemical sector, namely the direct and increasing interface of synthetic biology with more conventional chemical processes. Synthetic biology, empowered by recent advancements in digital and biotechnology fields, is now able to bring into existence high-performance materials that are less damaging to the environment. Sumitomo Chemical intends to combine decades of chemical knowledge with these new technologies to improve energy efficiency and create materials that have hitherto been difficult to synthesize by conventional methods.
One company official remarked: "We believe this advancement marks a major step toward achieving a circular economy and decarbonizing major industrial sectors. Biomass-based LCP is just the beginning." Sumitomo Chemical will continue with its approach toward technological innovation along with environmental consciousness for a sustainable industrial future.
