Sustainable Data Centers Cut Global Tech Emissions by 50%

23 June 2025

Data Centers

The IT industry is undergoing a green transformation, with several companies investing heavily in sustainable data center technologies to reduce their environmental impact. Modern green data centers utilizing AI-driven cooling and liquid immersion technologies are achieving 40% reductions in energy consumption compared to traditional facilities. 5G support and AI applications, with GreenexDC noting these distributed centers use 25% less power than conventional setups.

Enterprise Technology Emissions as Share of Total Industry Emissions, 2021

  • Enterprise technology is one of the biggest contributors to emissions, contributing approximately 350 to 400 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent gases (CO2e), making up 1% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Big firms like India-based Tata Consultancy Services has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by around 3,200 tonnes of CO2e in 2022 and decreased our average data center power usage effectiveness from 1.85 in 2016 to 1.66 in 2022.
  • Tata Consultancy Services aims to lower our carbon footprint by 70% by 2025 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. To reach these targets, we are adopting a greenhouse gas (GHG) management strategy focusing on green infrastructure, green IT, operational efficiencies powered by IT, and renewable energy.
  • Europe's data centers are going green, with over 100 operators (90% of capacity) pledging climate neutrality by 2030 through renewable energy and ultra-efficient infrastructure under the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact. This industry-led initiative sets a global sustainability benchmark for digital infrastructure.
  • Semiconductor innovations are playing a pivotal role in this green transition. Advanced 3D-stacked chips are reducing data transfer energy requirements by 30%, while new processor architectures are cutting server power consumption by 25%.
  • However, it also has some challenges, like only 15% of IT teams have sustainability expertise to implement green tech (e.g., AI-driven cooling, carbon-aware coding). 80% of firms lack tools to track Scope 3 IT emissions (cloud/vendor impacts).
  • Green IT requires a 20-30% upfront investment, but ROI takes 3-5 years, clashing with quarterly profit targets. 65% of CIOs prioritize cost-cutting over sustainability (McKinsey survey).

Nothing more exciting happening here in terms of content, but just filling up the space to make it look, at least at first glance, a bit more representative of how this would look in a real-world application.
